A Bond Is Not Insurance

This trips up most contractors, so it is worth saying plainly. Insurance protects you. A bond protects the person you are working for, or the state. If the surety pays a claim on your bond, the surety comes back to you for the money.

That is why bonds are underwritten on your credit and your financials rather than on the job.

License Bonds

Contractor License Bond

Required by the Contractors State License Board to hold an active California license. Filed directly with CSLB in the amount the board sets.

Qualifying Individual Bond

Required when an RMO or RME qualifies the license and does not own the required share of the company.

LLC Employee Worker Bond

Required of contractors licensed as an LLC, in addition to the license bond.

Disciplinary Bond

Required when CSLB reinstates a license following a disciplinary action.

Project Bonds

Bid Bond

Guarantees that if you win the bid, you will enter the contract at the price you bid.

Performance Bond

Guarantees the project will be completed according to the contract.

Payment Bond

Guarantees your subcontractors and suppliers get paid. On public works these are commonly required together with the performance bond.

What Underwriting Looks At

Personal credit, business financials, how long you have been in the trade, and your track record on similar work. License bonds are usually quick. Performance and payment bonds on larger contracts take more documentation, so start the conversation before the bid is due, not after.

If Your Credit Is Not Perfect

It is still worth asking. There are markets that write license bonds for contractors with credit problems, at a higher rate. Being declined once does not mean being declined everywhere.
