Michigan auto insurance requirements
Under the 2019 no-fault reform (effective July 2, 2020), bodily injury liability defaults to 250/500 and drivers may select no lower than 50/100; property damage liability is $10,000 for accidents in other states, and Property Protection Insurance (PPI) of up to $1 million for damage in Michigan is mandatory. PIP is mandatory with a choice of medical levels: unlimited, $500,000, $250,000, $250,000 with exclusions (requires qualified health coverage), $50,000 (Medicaid enrollees), or opt-out (Medicare Parts A and B). Uninsured motorist coverage is optional.
State minimums are a legal floor, not a recommendation. One serious accident can exceed them, so we quote higher limits side by side.
Workers' compensation in Michigan
Michigan employers must carry workers' compensation if they have three or more employees at one time, or one or more employees working at least 35 hours per week for 13 weeks or longer in the preceding 52 weeks.
